Overview:
ISI's College Remedial Mathematics is a computer assisted instruction program
designed to improve the math skills of college students. This is an extensive,
comprehensive course that covers five skill areas: Numerical Operations, Patterns and
Relations, Measurement and Geometry, Data Analysis, and Fundamentals of Algebra. The
course individualizes instruction for each student, selecting the appropriate skill areas
according to the student's pattern of response. In addition to this course, ISI also
offers
College Remedial Reading, College Remedial Writing
Mechanics, and Foundations of College Math.
Objectives:
This course consists of five skill areas, which are in turn made up of
many objectives. For a complete listing, please contact ISI:
(1) NUMERICAL OPERATIONS: solve a word problem involving coins; compare 2
numbers written in scientific notation; identify an expression not equal to others;
compare decimals raised to a power; identify why one number is not a factor of another;
estimate the product of 2 decimals; solve a word problem involving a sporting event; etc.
(2) PATTERNS AND RELATIONS: identify the formula used to calculate a test
score; find the pattern relating sides and diagonals from a vertex; identify the nth
letter in a pattern; identify the formula that correctly describes a procedure; identify
the number of objects in a pattern; etc.;
(3) MEASUREMENT & GEOMETRY: arrange units of measure in order;
compare English and metric units; compute the ingredients needed for a recipe; find the
area of an irregular figure; compare the area/perimeter of 2 figures; calculate the cost
of a carpet given room dimensions; etc.;
(4) DATA ANALYSIS: compute the mean; solve a word problem involving
computation of the mean; find the mode of a data set; find the median; identify the error
in computing a test grade; recompute an average when one piece of data is removed; etc.;
(5) ALGEBRA: solve an equation involving integers in the form of ax+b=c;
solve an equation involving decimals in the form of .ax+.b= .cx+d; express the perimeter
of a rectangle as a variable; solve for a missing dimension in the formula for area of
triangle/rectangle; etc.
